Mark 7:1-23
1 Now, a group of Pharisees came together to see Jesus, along with some of the teachers of the Law. 2 They saw that some of the disciples ate with impure hands - that is, they were unwashed. 3 For the Pharisees - in fact, all the Jews - don't eat until they have washed their hands - following the traditions handed down from the elders. 4 And when they come from the marketplace, they don't eat without washing. In fact, they observe many other rituals, such as washing of cups and pots and serving vessels and tables. 5 So the Pharisees and teachers of the Law asked him, “Why do your disciples eat with impure hands, not following the traditions of the elders?” 6 Jesus answered them, saying, “Isaiah prophesied accurately about you hypocrites, just as it is written, ‘This people honors me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. 7 Their worship is useless, since they make doctrine out of the traditions of men but ignore the commandments of God.’ 8 You sidestep the commandments of God but follow to the letter the traditions of men. 9 He said to them, “You are experts at bypassing God's Law to conform to your own traditions. 10 For Moses said, ‘Honor your father and mother’ [Exodus 20:12] and ‘Whoever speaks evil of their father and mother, let them be put to death’ [Exodus 21:17]. 11 But you say that what you would have dedicated to your father and mother has already been set aside for God. 12 In fact, you won't even allow a man to help their parents from the money they had dedicated to God. 13 Thus, you nullify the word of God through your tradition. And many other similar things you do.” 14 Calling all the people over to him, he said to them, “Listen to me, all of you, and understand! 15 Nothing outside a man can make him unclean by coming inside him, but it’s the things that come out of a man which pollute him. 16 If any man has ears to hear, let him hear.” 17 Then Jesus went inside the house [where they were staying], getting away from the people. The disciples asked Jesus about the illustration. 18 And he said to them, “Are you also lacking understanding? Can't you see that nothing that comes into a man can make him impure, 19 because it doesn't enter his heart. Instead it enters his stomach, excreting into the toilet after processing the food.” 20 Jesus said, “It's what comes out of a man that that marks him as unclean. 21 For from the heart of a man come forth evil thoughts, sexual sin, stealing, murder, adultery, 22 greed, nastiness, deceit, sexual indulgence, evil eye [envy], evil speaking, haughtiness, and foolishness. 23 All of these evil things originate on the inside of a man - and these are what mark him as unclean.”

Acts 11:19-30
19 At this same period of time, believers had spread as far as Phoenicia, Cyprus, and Antioch, due to the persecution that began with [the killing of] Stephen, but the message [of the good news of Jesus] had spread only to the Jews. 20 However, there were some men from Cyprus and Cyrene living in Antioch who shared the news of the Lord Jesus with the Greeks [non-Jews]. 21 And the hand of the Lord was with them and a great number believed and turned to the Lord. 22 This news came to the ears of the gathering of believers in Jerusalem, and they sent Barnabus to Antioch. 23 When Barnabus came and saw the grace of God [on the believers there], he encouraged them all to set their hearts to stay close to the Lord. 24 For he was a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and faith, and many people were added to their number. 25 Then Barnabus left to go find Saul in Tarsus, 26 and when he found him, Barnabus brought Saul to Antioch. For a whole year the two of them led the assembly of believers there and taught them much. Antioch was the first place that followers were called Christians [“Little Anointed Ones”]. 27 During this period, prophets came from Jerusalem to Antioch. 28 One of them named Agabus stood up and foretold that there would be a great famine throughout the [known] world, and [in fact] this happened during the time of [the Roman Emperor] Claudius [around 46 A.D.]. 29 The disciples decided to send as much help as each was able to their brothers who lived in Judea. 30 When they had completed [gathering the money], they sent it to the church leaders [in Jerusalem] by the hands of Barnabus and Saul.

1 Corinthians 10:19-33
19 I am not saying that the meat offered to an idol has special significance or even that the idol itself is important. 20 What I am saying is that the sacrifice is being offered to demons and not to God, and I don't want you to be in a “corporate union” with demons. 21 It's not OK to drink from the Lord's cup and the cup of demons. You can't share in the Lord's table and the table of demons. 22 Are we trying to make the Lord jealous? I wouldn't do that unless you think you're stronger than God! 23 [You may say,] “All things are lawful,” [since a Christian is not under the Law].[True], but not all things are beneficial. "All things are lawful", but not everything builds up [the body of believers]. 24 Let's not look out only for ourselves but for everyone else as well. 25 So, it’s OK for you to eat meat sold in the marketplace without raising questions of conscience 26 for [, as you say,] “The earth is the Lord's and everything that is in it”. 27 If a nonbeliever asks you for dinner, and you want to go, you can eat whatever is put in front of you without a question of conscience. 28 But what if someone tells you, “The meat was offered to an idol."? Don't eat the meat - for the sake of the person who raised the issue! 29 Even though you have no issue of conscience, they may have an issue of conscience. [You may say, ] “Why should my freedom be limited because of someone else's conscience? 30 If I am thankful for being able to partake of the food, why should I be criticized for enjoying it?” 31 [But I am saying,] whether you are eating or drinking, or whatever you are doing, do it for the glory of God. 32 Avoid offending Jews, or non-Jews, or the church of God. 33 As I said before, I try to please everyone, not seeking my own benefit but the benefit of many, so that they can be saved.
