And Yahweh’s anger burned against them. 4 Yahweh said to Moses, “Take all the leaders of these people, kill them and expose them in broad daylight before Yahweh, so that the Yahweh’s fierce anger may turn away from Israel.” 5 So Moses said to Israel’s judges, “Each of you must put to death those of your people who have yoked themselves to the Baal of Peor.” 6 Then an Israelite man brought into the camp a Midianite woman right before the eyes of Moses and the whole assembly of Israel while they were weeping at the entrance to the tent of meeting. 7 When Phinehas son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron, the priest, saw this, he left the assembly, took a spear in his hand 8 and followed the Israelite into the tent. He drove the spear into both of them, right through the Israelite man and into the woman’s stomach. Then the plague against the Israelites was stopped; 9 but those who died in the plague numbered 24,000.

1 After all this, [Paul] departed from Athens and arrived in Corinth. 2 There he found a Jewish man named Aquila, born in Pontus, who recently had moved from Italy with his wife Priscilla, because Claudius had commanded the Jews to leave Rome. 3 Paul came to them because they worked at the same trade. Paul stayed with them and worked with them, for they were tentmakers by trade. 4 And every Sabbath Day, in the synagogue, Paul reasoned and sought to bring to agreement both Jews and Greeks. 5 When Silas and Timothy arrived from Macedonia, Paul devoted himself to preaching the message to the Jews that Jesus was the Anointed One. 6 But they resisted and spoke against him, so he violently shook his robe and said to them, “Your blood is upon your own heads, I am clean from it. 7 He left them and entered the house of a man named Justus who worshipped God and lived next to the synagogue. 8 And the chief leader of the synagogue, Crispus, came to belief in the Lord along with his whole family. And many of the Corinthians heard the message, believed, and were baptized. 9 Then the Lord spoke in the night by a vision to Paul, “Don’t be afraid, but speak and don’t hold back, 10 for I am with you, and no man shall be able to oppose you to harm you, for I have many people in this city.” 11 And Paul continued there for a year and six months, teaching them the word of God.

13 Brothers and sisters, we do not want you to be uninformed about those who sleep in death, so that you do not grieve like the rest of mankind, who have no hope. 14 For we believe that Jesus died and rose again, and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him. 15 According to the Lord’s word, we tell you that we who are still alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will certainly not precede those who have fallen asleep. 16 For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. 17 After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever.
